“Kathleen Porter’s insights about skeletal alignment are destined to change the way we think about and inhabit our bodies.”
Christiane Northrup, M.D.
Kathleen writes and speaks widely on natural skeletal alignment, the same alignment that is discovered by all healthy toddlers in the world when they are learning how to stand and walk. This very particular alignment is the secret to a lifetime of authentic strength, easy flexibility and enduring vitality. She is the author of Sad Dog Happy Dog: How Poor Posture Affects Your Child’s Health & What You Can Do About It, as well as Ageless Spine, Lasting Health and has developed Mindful Alignment, a classroom program that provides teachers with the tools to empower children to find the support they need within themselves for solid, upright, comfortable and relaxed posture. Posture need not be hard work, and Kathleen shows, in a fun, light-hearted way, how naturally good posture is a doorway to greater confidence, presence, self-acceptance, overall good health and easeful living. She has taught principles of natural alignment through the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) and the Omega Institute.
Among the topics Kathleen presents (along with highly engaging, sophisticated slide/video presentations) are:
MINDFUL ALIGNMENT (or Let’s Get the Blood Flowing to their Brains!) This talk and slide show addresses the long and short-term consequences of the slouching epidemic plaguing so many children today. At a time when so many children are struggling with learning disorders, behavioral disorders, “unexplained” pain, skyrocketing sports injuries, depression and sleep problems—and are frequently medicated for these conditions—our culture is remiss in not examining the relationship between structural collapse and the effects this has on the nervous system, respiration, circulation and organ function. While there is no current research into this, anecdotal evidence shows dramatic improvement in children’s ability to be more calm, focused and more physically comfortable when guided into awareness of themselves being supported by naturally aligned bones. This talk is appropriate for faculty groups, parent/teacher groups, as well as educational conferences and organization meetings.
ALIGN THE BONES FOR AUTHENTIC STRENGTH, EASY FLEXIBILITY AND RELIEF FROM PAIN
The skeleton, as the underlying framework of support for a healthy body, plays far bigger a role in whether or not one suffers from back, neck, hip, knee and a host of other pain conditions. A collapsed structure, as well as one that is overly lifted up with chronic muscle tension, distorts the spinal cord, the primary neural pathway, as well as creating compression within the spinal vertebrae and discs and within weight-bearing joints. Many people find their pain problems begin to resolve themselves as soon as they learn how to be supported by an aligned skeleton, often when all else has failed. Each attendee will be guided toward an understanding of how to find the support of aligned bones for comfortably sitting in a chair.
THE PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL BENEFITS OF NATURAL ALIGNMENT (OR HOW WOULD BUDDHA SIT?)
How would Buddha sit? Slouching in a heap? Or with a tensely-lifted-up chest? Would Jesus be sporting six-pack abs and buns of steel underneath his robes? Not likely, as these distortions from the naturally aligned center create chronic tensions and block the flow of energy throughout the body. A naturally aligned skeleton provides the framework of support for the body that allows muscles—and the mind—to relax. In fact, only when we have the support of aligned bones is it finally safe to fully relax without any fear of collapse. We find that we have all that we need within ourselves to “hold ourselves” up and together, without unnecessary effort or strain. This talk includes an illuminating slideshow that touches upon energy, breathing and the relationship of alignment on the functioning of chakras. Participants will have an opportunity to experience how limiting beliefs and attitudes we have about ourselves and others drop away, as “letting go” can happen more easily when we have an abiding support within ourselves. Free the body, free the mind.
